Algal-mediated Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and their Antibacterial Activity

Abstract

A green, low-cost, and straightforward method was implemented for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Digenea simplex Algal Extract (D. simplex). The formation of AgNPs was initially indicated by a golden yellow color of the solution and UV-Vis λmax at 410 nm. Key factors such as reaction time, temperature, pH, concentrations of Ag+ and algal extract was also investigated. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of alga-derived biomolecules which assets the reduction of silver ions. TEM analysis revealed the successful synthesis of spherical AgNPs with an average size of 12.86 ± 4.84 nm. The biosynthesized AgNPs exhibited a strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. marcescen with inhibition zones (19 mm). The result demonstrated the promising application of algal mediated AgNPs in the development of eco-friendly antibacterial agents.
