Bioactive materials represent a wide range of materials with unique features such as compatibility, reactivity, and the ability to mimic biological structures. The unique characteristics enable bioactive materials to be processed as medicinal supplements, incorporated into food packaging materials, and to reform tissues and bones. Therefore, these features drive many scholars to shift their research focus to bring these materials into the production world to resolve difficulties in human life. Extracting these materials from different sources can be executed through several classical and advanced techniques. The activities and applications of these materials are dependent on the extraction conditions, such as time, temperature, and solid-to-liquid ratio. The outlook of these materials is promising, yet many issues need to be resolved before scaling up the process of using, incorporating, and interacting with these materials with different tissues, biofilms, and other bio-based materials. Overcoming obstacles and realizing these materials’ full potential in meeting global requirements requires rigorous scientific investigation and interdisciplinary research cooperation. This review paves the way to understand the potential of bioactive materials to be assessed for food packaging film upgrades.
