Adopting the 3D BIM Coordination during the Early Design Stages in Egypt

Abstract

Change orders, conflicts, and miscoordination between different disciplines are challenges that still faced the construction sector. These challenges occur continuously during the project lifetime, particularly in the construction phase leads to time and cost overrun. Day by day, the construction sector saturating with Building Information Modelling (BIM) strategies. BIM introduces uses like 3D coordination that play an important role in the construction sector, for its ability to solve conflicts in the early stages of design. Consequently, firms have tried to develop their systems but not always decide to adopt BIM, partially due to the limited knowledge of the BIM’s effective processes, protocols, and workflows. This paper presents statistics that were collected before and after using BIM in a real case, to clarify the value of adopting the BIM. The main objective of this paper is to adopt BIM in the design phase to avoid those problems that arise in the construction stage. A case study comparing the quality and time requirements of the same project was measured by three scenarios: at the first, using a 2D CAD tool; second, using the current traditional use of BIM and finally, using full BIM enhanced by (BIM360, Dynamo, Revit, and Naviswork applications). The data for analysis were obtained via a consultant firm database, which focuses on the detection of clashes during the design development. As a result, the implementation of BIM has been verified using the proposed technologies to reduce the clashes and eliminate field conflicts.
