This protocol describes a systematic review synthesising empirical evidence on how secondary-school principals in sub-Saharan Africa enact administrative versus instructional leadership roles, the contextual factors shaping those orientations, and their implications for teaching and learning. Three databases (Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, ERIC) and supplementary sources will be searched. Screening, extraction and appraisal (MMAT 2018) will be conducted in duplicate, and findings combined through a convergent narrative thematic synthesis structured by the Hallinger and Murphy (1985) PIMRS dimensions. Reporting follows PRISMA 2020
