Adaptation or Loss? Climate-Related Migration and Non-Economic Loss and Damage in Semi-Arid Tanzania

Abstract

This repository contains the processed environmental datasets, analytical outputs, metadata, and R scripts associated with the study “Adaptation or Loss? Climate-Related Migration and Non-Economic Loss and Damage in Semi-Arid Tanzania.” The study examines climate-related mobility among pastoral households in Simanjiro District, northern Tanzania, by integrating climatic analysis, vegetation dynamics, household survey data, logistic regression modelling, focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and field observations. The repository provides reproducibility materials for the quantitative analyses, including R scripts for: (i) preparation of monthly climate data; (ii) estimation of potential evapotranspiration and calculation of the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) at 3-, 6-, and 12-month timescales; (iii) drought-event characterization and trend analysis using the Mann–Kendall test and Sen’s slope; (iv) temporal analysis of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI); (v) descriptive analysis and scientific classification of household migration patterns; and (vi) binary logistic regression modelling of household migration and migration exhibiting Loss and Damage characteristics. Processed, non-sensitive environmental data and aggregate analytical outputs are included to support transparency and reproducibility. Row-level household survey data are not publicly deposited because they were collected from human participants under conditions of confidentiality and ethical approval. The repository therefore provides analytical code, metadata, variable documentation, processed environmental data, and non-identifiable derived outputs without disclosing confidential participant information.
