A Single Case Test of the Critical Making Critical Niches Conceptual Framework

Abstract

This paper presents a practical verification of the Critical Making Critical Niches (CMCN) conceptual framework and co-design method. A single case study is presented, where CMCN is tested with a solar microgrid provider in a low-income community outside the City of Johannesburg, South Africa, characterized as a living lab. Two qualitative data sets are presented: participant observation data from conducting a CMCN workshop and a set of interview data collected after the workshop. After analysis it is surmised that CMCN provides a useful framework for allowing stakeholders to unearth socio-technical issues in energy transition living labs, constructively discuss power dynamics, empower participants in their role in the project and their community and foster social learning.
