A Cavity Data Acquisition System for Defect Prevention in Injection Molding

Abstract

This paper proposes a cavity data acquisition system for injection molding applications. The system is composed of non-destructive in-mold sensors that monitor the state of the melt inside the cavities. Additionally, the position of the sensors is dependent on the geometry of the injected part. This allows early detection of defects by investigating abnormal variations of the monitored parameters in regions where these defects are suspected. A case scenario is proposed in which we simulate the molding conditions of a plastic part using SolidWorks Plastics. Then, the positions of the suggested sensors are derived. The system promises more control over the injection conditions inside the mold as well as improved overall quality of production.
